Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about the NY 5-hour pre-licensing course.

Eligibility

Who is eligible to take this course?

Any New York State resident who holds a valid learner's permit for a Class D (standard) or Class E (commercial) driver's license. Applicants for Class DJ or MJ junior licenses are not eligible for this online course — you must take the in-person 5-hour course.

My permit is expired. Can I still enroll?

No. A valid, non-expired NYS learner's permit is required to enroll. You must renew your permit at a DMV office before registering.

I already took a 5-hour pre-licensing course at a driving school. Do I need to take it again?

No. The pre-licensing course is a one-time requirement. If you have a valid MV-278 certificate from a DMV-approved provider, you do not need to take this course again.

Does completing this course let me skip the road test?

No. This course is required before you can schedule your road test, but it does not replace it. After completing the course, DMV will be notified within 24–48 hours. Once your completion is posted, you can schedule your road test.

Course & Format

How long does the course take?

The course is 5 hours of instruction time (270 minutes), plus a mandatory 2-hour alcohol and drug awareness module. Total minimum seat time is approximately 6 hours. You can complete it at your own pace — pause and resume anytime.

Do I have to complete the course in one sitting?

No. Your progress is saved automatically. You can log out and return to where you left off. Each module must be completed before the next one unlocks.

What devices and browsers does the course support?

The course works on any modern browser: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, or Edge. It is optimized for desktop and laptop computers. Mobile phones and tablets are supported but a larger screen is recommended for the best experience.

What are the 10 course modules?

The modules cover: (1) Highway Transportation System, (2) NYS Traffic Laws, (3) Vehicle Operation, (4) Alcohol & Drug Awareness, (5) Sharing the Road, (6) Vehicle Safety, (7) Pedestrians & Cyclists, (8) Motorcycle Awareness, (9) Environmental Responsibility, and (10) Defensive Driving Strategies.

Identity Verification & Checkpoints

Why does the course ask me to answer personal questions and enter a phone code?

NYS DMV requires all online pre-licensing course providers to verify that the registered student is the one completing the course. We use a combination of personal knowledge questions, phone verification codes, and typing pattern analysis at multiple points throughout the course.

I failed an identity checkpoint 3 times. What happens?

After 3 failed identity verifications, your account is permanently disqualified per NYS DMV regulations. You will need to re-register for the course. There is no appeal process — this is a DMV requirement we cannot override.

I did not receive my phone verification code. What should I do?

First, make sure you entered the correct phone number. Check that your phone has signal and is not in Do Not Disturb mode. Wait 60 seconds before requesting a resend. If the problem persists, contact us at info@drivercourseonline.com or call our support line.

Can someone help me take the course?

No. NYS law requires that only the registered student complete the course. Having another person answer questions, enter codes, or assist with any portion of the course is a violation of DMV regulations and may result in disqualification and invalidation of your completion.

Quizzes

How do the quizzes work?

Each of the 10 modules includes a 10-question quiz. You must score 70% or higher (7 out of 10 correct) to advance to the next module. Each question has a 60-second time limit. Questions are drawn from a shuffled bank and presented in a different order each attempt.

What happens if I fail a module quiz?

You can retake the quiz. Questions will be re-shuffled each attempt. There is no limit on quiz retake attempts, but each failed attempt is logged.

Do I need to re-read the module content before retaking a quiz?

You are not required to, but we strongly recommend reviewing the module content — especially sections you found difficult. The quiz questions test specific facts from the module.

Completion & DMV Reporting

How will DMV know I completed the course?

We automatically report your completion to the NYS DMV electronically within 24–48 hours of finishing the course. You do not need to submit anything to DMV yourself. Once your record is updated, you can schedule your road test.

Will I receive a certificate?

Yes. A digital certificate of completion is available immediately on your completion page. You can save or print it. Note: your road test scheduling is based on the DMV electronic posting, not the paper certificate.

I completed the course but DMV says I have no record. What do I do?

DMV posting typically takes 24–48 hours. If it has been more than 48 hours, contact us at info@drivercourseonline.com with your name, date of birth, and motorist ID number. We will verify the submission and follow up with DMV on your behalf.

Payment & Refunds

How much does the course cost?

The course costs $34.95. This is a one-time fee that includes all course materials, identity verification, DMV reporting, and your completion certificate. There are no hidden fees.

What payment methods are accepted?

We accept all major credit and debit cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover) via Braintree, a PayPal company. We do not store your card number.

What is your refund policy?

We offer a full refund if you have not started the course content (completed 0 modules). Once you begin the first module, no refund is available. See our full Refund Policy at drivercourseonline.com/refund for details.
